Comenzó a trabajar a los 19 años en la RKO, primero en el departamento de sonorización y más tarde en el de edición. Trabajando como montador conoció a Orson Welles, quien le pidió que le montase su película "Ciudadano Kane" (1941). Por esta película, la única que montó, fue candidato al Oscar al mejor montaje.

Debutó en la dirección en 1944 con "La venganza de la mujer pantera". Su cine, musical, negro y fantástico, destacó por su dominio técnico, sobriedad y excelente narrativa. Todo un director, capaz de abarcar todas las materias del cine.[/align]
